집마다 and 집집마다

Korean Grammar In Use – Beginning page 117, about “N마다” (each/every N).

In the case of the word 집, 집집마다 is used instead of 집마다.

요즘에는 집집마다 인터넷을 사용해요. These days, all households use the internet.

Really? I didn’t know that.

But then why did I get many hits when I searched Google News for “집마다”?

집마다 on Google News Search

About 754 news articles used the word 집마다

Mmm… misprint? Maybe they’re both acceptable? Mystery… 정말 수수께끼, 수수께끼예요. 😀 ###

  1. Even journalists and editors make mistakes. 집집마다 is used in over 15.000 articles (via Google news), so it doesn’t seem entirely unlikely that this might indeed be the more grammatical way to use that construction (N+마다) in conjunction with the word 집. 🙂
