There is a K-pop song that was no. 1 on music charts for a few weeks: 넌 is 뭔들 (You’re the Best) sung by girl group Mamamoo.
넌 is 뭔들… ‘you’re’ is ‘뭔들’?
I was curious about the meaning of the title: 넌 is 뭔들 so I asked my Korean teacher, Google 선생님.
According to Chosun.com: 넌 뭘 해도 예쁘고 잘 어울린다는 뜻을 지닌 신조어. (It’s a newly invented word which means ‘whatever you do is beautiful and looks good on you’). (http://news.chosun.com/site/data/html_dir/2016/02/16/2016021601050.html)
According to 매일경제: ‘넌 is 뭔들’의 뜻은 좋아하는 사람은 어떻더라도 상관없다는 의미를 갖고 있다. ( ‘넌 is 뭔들’ means you don’t mind how a person you love behaves or looks.) (http://news.mk.co.kr/newsRead.php?year=2016&no=154246)
So everything he does is OK for you.
And I also searched Twitter to see how the slang phrase ‘넌 is 뭔들’ is used.
It turns out it’s a pretty useful phrase because you can change the 넌 (you’re) to any person’s name you like. For example, if you like the boy group BTOB, you can say ‘비투비 is 뭔들’. (Whatever BTOB does, they’re awesome. BTOB is the best.)
If you like Suzy, you can say “수지 is 뭔들” (Whatever Suzy wears, she is beautiful. Suzy is the best).
And it’s even used in title of a news article.
